Study abroad

International experience has become an integral part of the student curriculum at UCL.

Exchange programmes are designed to allow students to experience other ways of teaching and learning, while simultaneously getting a taste of the culture of another country. This provides an invaluable dimension to their UCL degree thus acquiring a true European or international added value.

UCL has signed agreements with over 300 universities world-wide, who have agreed to enrol UCL students during one term or a complete academic year.
The European Erasmus programme, the flagship of student exchange in Europe, was initiated by the European Union to promote interuniversity cooperation. Switzerland, which does not take part in the programme, funds outgoing and incoming student exchanges from its own resources.

To offer students a possibility to study outside Europe, UCL initiated the Mercator programme in 2001.

And finally, for those who prefer to stay closer to home or pursue fluency in the second national language, Erasmus Belgica allows students to experience studying in a Flemish university.

All of these exchange programmes provide financial assistance to help pay for the additional costs of studying abroad or outside UCL. The level of the scholarship is proportionate to the financial means of the candidate.
