Thermodynamics of phase changes

Namur, 24-27 May 2009 : first announcement and call for papers
The international conference, "Thermodynamics of Phase Changes" (EUROTHERM-84) will take place in Namur, Belgium, during 24-27 May 2009. The conference is organized by the University of Louvain under the auspices of EUROTHERM.

Phase changes are ubiquitous both in nature and technological applications, and their study has grown over the last years to be a large and fruitful subject. Nowadays phase changes constitute a major domain of application in non-equilibrium thermodynamics and statistical physics. The present EUROTHERM seminar is devoted to recent developments in thermodynamics of phase changes and their application to modern engineering practice and emerging technologies, such as heat transfer equipment, semiconductors, optoelectronics, propulsion devices, nuclear plants and others. Topics of interest include:

  • Non-equilibrium thermodynamics
  • Heat and mass transfer across interfaces
  • Boiling, evaporation, and condensation
  • Nucleation and crystallization
  • Defects in single crystals
  • Morphological instabilities
  • Fast moving interfaces
  • Thin films and contact lines
  • Hydrodynamic instabilities with phase changes
  • Phase-Field Theories

The meeting will include both invited and contributed presentations. It is designed to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and the interaction between theorists, experimentalists and practitioners working in the various fields of phase changes.
