Masters in Computer Science in English

Etudiants Informatique
Since the 2009 academic year, UCL students are offered master degrees in computer science fully in English: the Master in Computer Science Engineering and the Master in Computer Science will indeed be taught in English, by far the most frequently used in this discipline. UCL is the first university in French-speaking Belgium to offer this opportunity for a full curriculum in computer science.
In practice, this means that all communications relating to the course (such as syllabi, lectures or exam questions) are in English; students however retain the option to express themselves in French. These principles have already been probed since the Bologna reform in 2007: they have been perceived very positively, as indicated by the results of evaluations from students and education staff.

Not only does this initiative provide French-speaking students the opportunity to practice English and have their diploma attest to this competence, it will also allow foreign-language students to enter masters in Computer Science at UCL. This facilitates the opening of joint degrees between universities, such as those already in place between the KULeuven and UCL or UCL and UPC in Barcelona.

"A promotion of trilingualism (French, English, Dutch) is undoubtedly a step forward for a profession and an industry geared towards both the international and, especially, the domestic market," said Thierry Castagne, Deputy General Director for Wallonia at Agoria, interviewed about the UCL initiative. "Over all 13 Agoria sectors, 71% of the approximately 300,000 jobs are in companies with foreign capital and 74% of the activity is carried out for export. In short, putting the world in the heads of young people is a considerable asset for their future and the development of the technology industry. "
