This collection of essays published by Philippe Van Parijs between 1979 and 1992 consists of four parts: 1. A new start for historical materialism? 2. Crisis theory shattered. 3. Exploitation theory rejuvenated. 4. Forward without socialism! It contains, among other pieces, the written version of a presentation he made as a graduate student at an Oxford seminar run by Charles Taylor and G.A. Cohen ("From contradiction to catastrophe") and one of the classic texts of the basic income movement ("A capitalist road to communism"). It ends with an epilogue titled "The Greening of Marx". It is dedicated to the September Group, whose founder, G.A. Cohen, died in August 2009.
