Functionalized probesUse of chemically-functionalized AFM probes for quantitative force measurements
Probes and model substrata were functionalized with alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers terminated with CH3 (hydrophobic) and OH (hydrophilic) groups and force-distance curves were recorded under water. Contrary to the OH/OH probe/substratum combination, the CH3/CH3 combination shows strong adhesion forces reflecting hydrophobic interactions. Functionalized probes were also used to characterize the local surface properties of microbial cells (Y.F. Dufrêne, Biophys. J., (2000), in press).
