Insurance

When registered at UCL the student automatically receives accident and damage insurance coverage for academic related activities.

Joining a health-insurance company ("mutuelle")
Every Belgian or foreign student who resides in Belgium has to be covered by health-insurance, called "mutuelle". This insurance covers part of your medical, pharmaceutical and hospital costs, all of them very expensive in Belgium. It is thus indispensable that you inquire from your country of origin whether your organization covers your medical costs in Belgium.

  • European Union
Membership of a "mutuelle" is compulsory except for European-Union nationals, who, as members in their own country, have to get their european card from their federation and for some students with study grants whose organization covers their health costs (check with the organization that gave you your study grant).
  • Non-European Union
For non-European Union country nationals who are linked to an insurance system of this kind in their country, you have to inquire with the insurance company whether they intervene abroad, in the framework of international agreements.

Conditions and cost of membership of a "mutuelle"
To become a member of a "mutuelle" during your stay in Belgium, you have to, first,

  • be a regular student at UCL (enrolled) be in possession of the certificate of studies issued by the Registrar's Office, exclusively destined to the "mutuelle"
  • The amount due per trimester legal membership (in 2006) is 49,28 € (single student).

It is indispensable to pay the subscription fee every trimester. There are "mutuelle" offices located on the campuses of Louvain-la-Neuve and Brussels. Addresses are given on the spot.

You have to know that in the case of a medical problem, you may go to a doctor of your choice. You don't go to a hospital emergency ward unless there is a genuine emergency or having been referred by a doctor you consulted.
