Cretan Excavations Rewarded by the Compagnie du Bois Sauvage
UCL Professor Jan Driessen has received the 2008-2009 scientific Prize of the Compagnie du Bois Sauvage for his research work conducted on Crete.
Jan Driesen is full professor at the Department of Archeology and History of Classical Art at UCL. He received his prize from the hands of Vincent Doumier, CEO of the Compagnie du Bois Sauvage. Since July 2007, Professor Driesen has been involved in excavations on the site of Sissi, on the island of Crete, together with members of the K.U.Leuven and a team of specialists from all over Europe. Archeologists, anthropologists, ceramics experts, topographers, paleo-botanists and curators try to retrace the Minoan history of a place that might have been used as refuge by the inhabitants of the Malia palace. The project has been baptized "SArPédon - Archeological project of Sissi / UCL / Belgian School of Athens".
The Prize of the Compagnie du Bois Sauvage acknowledges the merits and value of the research conducted by the UCL team in co-operation with several other Belgian and foreign universities involved in the field of human and social sciences. The prize, accompanied by a check of € 12,500, is typically awarded to interdisciplinary projects.
