Stereotype priming effects on performance

Merely priming a concept like a stereotype can impact our behaviour towards assimilation (i.e., prime-consistent behaviour) or contrast (i.e., prime-inconsistent behaviour). These effects are now well-known (see for instance Bargh & Dijksterhuis, 2001 for a review) but mechanisms underlying these effects are still debated. Some authors proposed a mediated account through the Active Self Concept (i.e., Wheeler, DeMarree, & Petty, 2007). My PhD thesis was thus focused on testing some hypotheses from this account and notably how independent and interdependent self-construals can moderate/mediate stereotype priming effects on behaviour. I also investigated some boundary conditions of priming effects like applicability in interdependent and collective tasks.

Sexist humour effects on women

Expression of sexism is socially unacceptable except under the disguise of a joke. Research investigating the consequences of sexist humour has concentrated primarily on the effects of sexist humour on men’s subsequent responses. As such, we are interested to fill in this gap by addressing what influence sexist humour has on women’s performance, career choices and confrontation behaviours.
