Regulation concerning graduate schools

Graduate regulation by the Académie Universitaire Louvain (AUL)
(approved by the Academy’s Council on 9 May, 2005)

Full text of the regulation

" The principles of the present regulation shall apply to all doctoral courses held at the Academy, that is to say

  • the academic qualification of ‘doctor’, once a doctoral course has been completed, continues to be based on two mandatory components:
  • Academic training amounting to 60 credits at the highest level, referred to as "graduate training" under the terms of the decree;
  • The carrying out of research ‘as preparatory work for a doctoral thesis’, amounting to at least 120 credits,
    • the doctoral course includes four mandatory stages – admission, confirmation, private defence and public viva – possibly preceded by a trial admission period."

    CDD or Commissions doctorales de domaine (Doctoral Domain Committees) within the Academy

    " At the Academy, one doctoral domain committee (French acronym : CDD) is set up for each of the domains provided for in the decree (Graduate colleges).

    The CDD is composed in such a way that a minimum representation of the Academy’s universities authorized to award a doctorate in the domain and disciplines concerned by the domain is guaranteed. Doctoral domain committees shall also include representatives from the academic staff, the terms of which will be set by the committees.

    Composition of the CDDs approved by our academy

    A doctoral domain committee may draft specific provisions for a certain area of study as well as delegating its missions to specific organs whilst maintaining the responsibility for these tasks.
