Grant holders and employees (PhD students, researchers and lecturers)

All salaried workers are entitled to family benefits (FR, NL, DE). Five types of benefits come under the benefits system:

  • birth grant;
  • adoption allowance;
  • basic family allowance;
  • increased orphan’s allowance;
  • supplementary family allowance.

Family benefits concern the following people:
  • the recipient;
  • the child beneficiary;
  • the person entitled to the benefit.

The father (designated the recipient) is first to qualify for benefits. However, under certain circumstances, it can be the mother who qualifies, or another person. As a general rule, it is the mother who will collect the family benefits.

The application for family allowance, either when a person is employed or following the birth of the first child, must be submitted through the employer using a standard form available from the Human Resources Department.,
