EducationFor more than a century, the economics department at Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) has played a leading role in economics education, research, and service to the public. The department today is a vibrant collection of professors, researchers and students. It hosts a research community of 100 people affiliated to world-class research centers: the Center for Operations Research and Econometrics (CORE, UCL); the Institut de Recherches Economiques et Sociales (IRES, UCL); the Chaire d'Ethique Economique et Sociale (ETES, UCL) and the Centre of Research in the Economics of Development (CRED, FUNDP ). According to the 2011 ranking of the economics departments published by the University of Tilburg, it ranks 30th worldwide, and 6th in Europe. Its PhD program is the best one in continental Europe, 3rd in Europe.
The department offers exceptional opportunities for undergraduate (bachelor, masters) and graduate study. It is intellectually healthy. New ideas and new directions in research are being developed actively. The department is renowned for the availability and openness of its faculty. Its master programme has recently received the UCL label "International Master" recognizing the work done to internationalize enrolment and teaching contents. The department offers a series of reflexive courses in parallel to mainstream economics courses, as well as access to the European Doctoral Program (EDP) for students with outstanding marks.
