Funding possibilities for doctoral students
1. Non-Belgian PhD students should look for funding in their home country.
2. Other sources of funding:
· Assistantships at UCL: teaching and research within Departments at UCL (2 years renewable twice; total 6 years). It is required to speak French fluently since one has to teach undergraduates. Research means thesis preparation (50% of work time for this is granted). Positions are announced in May. Students in the MA program can apply during the academic year.
· Fonds national de la Recherche scientifique (FNRS) : applications should be introduced in January at the FNRS (see http://www1.fnrs.be/ ). Age limit is 26 years at the start of the contract. Students who got an undergraduate degree outside Belgium are eligible but their degree must be declared equivalent to a Belgian one. This requires some timely preparation.
o Aspirant : this application should be introduced by the student (2 years renewable once; total 4 years) before 15 January at the rectorate. The project must be carefully prepared with and approved by a professor. Students in the MA program can apply during the academic year.
o FRFC project : should be introduced by the promotor (2 - 4 years).
· Fonds Spéciaux de Recherche at UCL (FSR) : projects should be introduced by the promotor before 15 February to the Research Administration of the university. To be eligible the candidate should have applied for the FNRS Aspirant fellowship before 15 January (2 years not renewable). FSR fellowships are usually given for one year, rarely more. See http://www.uclouvain.be/recherche-appels.html
· If promotors are partners of a European Research and Training Network, a limited number of researcher/months can be available. Currently CORE is partner of an EST network that makes it possible to fund students from outside Belgium. Partner universities can likewise fund foreign students, thus including CORE students for up to one year. See http://www.core.ucl.ac.be/Training/EST/EST.html
· See also http://www.uclouvain.be/en-3889.html
3. CORE funds are limited to one or two doctoral fellowships per year within the framework of two contracts.
· PAI whose area of research concerns “ Economic policy and finance in the global economy : equilibrium analysis and social evaluation” (may be renewed)
· ARC “Economic analysis of heterogeneity in social organizations” (may be renewed).
The attached form should be filled in and introduced to the Executive Committee through the Administrative Director not later than June 1. Applications for CORE funds will be considered only if (at least) one application to an outside source has been filed. A copy of the latter must be provided.
