Academic Staff

UCL employs three types of academic staff:

- appointed academic staff

- Professors are appointed on a full-time or part-time basis (around 600 fte). Their activities can be divided into three main categories: teaching, carrying out research and providing services to the public. The course of an academic career  is defined in the legislative framework observed by all universities that are part of the French-speaking Community of Belgium.

- Clinical professors, teach, carry out research and are involved in the services provided by the Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc (Brussels) or Mont-Godinne (Namur). The course of the clinical (academic) career is described in the Statut des docteurs en Médecine, pharmaciens et dentistes des Cliniques universitaires.

guest lecturers or professors (around 50 full time equivalent), are employed for limited time periods, lasting from one to three years. They assume the share of the teaching load that is conferred upon them in the framework of a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD programme.

visiting lecturers or professors, are hosted by a department or research group for a short period of time, for example as part of a brief research visit or a sabbatical.
