Postgraduate & Ph.D.

For a training (research) in psychology of religion,

there are two different possibilities depending on whether you have

Previous degree in psychology

One year program

If you have a previous training in psychology (at least 180 ECTS + 2nd cycle thesis) you can follow a one-year specialization program - Certificat approfondi en psychologie : Psychologie de la religion - that includes 30 credits of courses (psychology of religion, related psychological fields, research methodology) plus 30 credits of research (practice and report). See here for contact and detailed program. Part of the program can be followed in other Universities, members of the European Network for the Psychology of Religion.

Ph.D. in psychology

If you have a master degree (5 years) in psychology or an equivalent background (most  curriculum in psychology + other part in other social sciences; to be evaluated by the doctoral commission which may request additional courses to reach equivalence) you may apply for a PhD in psychology at the Psychology department of the UCL (Université catholique de Louvain at Louvain-la-Neuve). Once acceptd, you will enter into the program of the Doctoral school in Pyschological Sciences. The research and thesis will be in psychology of religion, but the doctoral training is in psychology in general, with emphasis (research, courses, methodological expertise) in major subfields of psychology. The doctoral program (courses, research, and thesis) can be in English. The courses for the beginning of the doctoral program can be chosen among the following orientations:

  • personality and social psychology
  • developmental psychology
  • clinical psychology

Within one of these broader orientations, if you're willing to do your research and thesis in psychology of religion, you will be integrated in the Centre for psychology of religion. Contact: Vassilis Saroglou. A CV with a brief research project of two pages will be appreciated.

Previous degree in other than psychology fields

If you have another than psychology degree, i.e. Bachelor (3 years) or Master (+ 1 or 2 years), you may be interested to do - depending on your previous curriculum - a one- (60 ETCS) or two-year (120 ECTS) Master in sciences of religion and select one of the four orientations of this Master that is psychology of religion. This Master implies courses and a master (research) thesis (in psychology of religion if you choose this orientation).

A possibility to be registered in a PhD program in psychology is not excluded if the previous curriculum is close to psychology, but the decision depends heavily on the 3d cycle Committee (Psychology) and the acceptance to this program will require a year of courses for "upgrating".
