French language courses

Intensive courses are organized at Louvain-la-Neuve and at Louvain-en-Woluwe, before classes start and during the academic year.

During summer holidays and winter break

Université catholique de Louvain, in collaboration with CLL, Centres de langues, organises an Intensive French language programme especially designed for international students. Besides the French language courses, this programme comprises a series of activities and visits allowing students to discover Belgian and Francophone culture, thus facilitating their integration in the university environment.

All international students of UCL will be offered an advantageous inscription rate: 345 EURO (August - September 2009) and 343 EURO (January 2010) for 75 hours of activities spread over three weeks. In addition, the first 50 Erasmus students who register in one of the two sessions will be granted an "early bird" rate of 100 EURO.

During the academic year 2009-2010, the programme will be organised twice times:

- A summer session wil take place from 24th August until 11th September 2009
- A winter session will take place from 4th until 22rd January th 2010.

During the academic year 

There are several possibilities for the incoming student :

  • The "Institut des langues vivantes" (ILV) is a scientific logistics service of the UCL, which provides courses in 14 modern languages, among which French as a foreign language.  The exchange student can take 3 courses of French in his programme. These courses are free of charge for exchange students (ad-hoc document to be handed in at the ILV secretary's office).  The courses are concentrated on one semester or spread over the whole academic year. 

    The French lecturers take to heart not only to teach the language, but also to initiate the incoming student to the local culture (by means of cultural visits, shows organised by the students, thematic activities, etc.).

    In addition, the ILV has a self-teaching centre, where students can learn languages at their own pace.

  • The "Centre de Langues de Louvain-la-Neuve" (CLL) provides courses in 32 languages, French, English and Dutch included. Further information can be obtained on the website www.cll.be or from the secretariat:

  • The non-profit organisation "Centre Placet" (Section Language), organises from October until December and from February until May conversation groups in aid of foreign students who want to improve their knowledge of the French language.
