Consumers in a liberalized environment

Competition, and competition related concepts, are nowadays central in society and the organisation of relations on the markets. Competition is indeed supposed to provide the system that is best equipped to deliver the best results for consumers. Competition has thus become the primary tool through which public authorities attempt to serve consumers.

The research that is carried out at the Centre de droit de la consommation focuses on this contention. Is it appropriate to consider that consumers are better served in a context where competition dominates ? Are there limits to a competition based system – limits that must be imposed in order to serve the consumers themselves ? Is the competition based system meant to improve the situation of consumers or is it rather oriented towards customers ?
