In order to foster mobility on the campus, UCL wanted to offer an ubiquitous access, for all members of the university community, to a WiFi network based on secure proof technologies.
The main objective, mobility, doesn't supersede the wired network whose reliability and performances have been largely demonstrated. All applications requiring high bandwidth (video conference, backups, file transfers,...) should be avoided on the WiFi network.
By the end of 2008, the WiFi access should be available in teaching rooms and libraries, as well as in meeting rooms and other places where mobility needs justify it. Access is homogeneous (identical procedures and authentication) throughout the Louvain-la-Neuve and Louvain-en-Woluwe campus.

Exchange programs and opportunities, boosted by the Bologna Process, and increased mobility within the "Academie Louvain", prompted UCL to join the Eduroam project. which enables transparent access to the WiFi networks among partner universities. Among several European universities which joined this project, one finds the following Belgian universities:
F.U.N.D.P. (Faculté Universitaires Notre-Dame de la Paix NAMUR)
K.U.Leuven (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven)
U.C.L. (Université catholique de Louvain)
