The soil is intrinsically heterogeneous and its spatial variability deeply affects water flow and solute transport. Carbon, water and energy fluxes, plant growth, aquifer pollutions are some of important processes, which directly depend on soil regulation. Our research mainly deals with two aspects of solute transport and water flow in heterageneous media:

Hydro-pedology: Impact of soil structure on water infiltration/ solute transport

Soil structure/morphology affects water infiltration and solute transport. How to characterize and incorporate structure-related information into models for predicting flow and transport through the root zone is the main challenge of our research. Currently, we are working on better characterizing the effect of macropores in loam and how to use pedological informations to improve the description of soil hydraulic properties. We are also investigating the role of the surface connectivity on runoff at the plot scale.

Understanding and modelling soil-root interactions

Understanding and modelling soil root interactions is of importance for numerous purpposes like for irrigation management or for improving water efficiency. Thanks to new modelling tools and novel experimental techniques,  we investigate the root water uptake processes and its effect on 3-D water content pattern at different scales. The R-SWMS model is one example of this new type of model, which help understand the 3-D soil moisture patterns generated by plant water uptake. This tool may help us in the future to charcterize soil and plant properties based on model inversion.
