Research activities on forest ecosystem functioning
The general topic of my research is the functioning of forest ecosystems in relation to global change and forest management. The research projects that I conducted or in which I collaborated led me to become interested in mineral nutrition of trees, in forest health and in biogeochemical cycling at the ecosystem scale. I usually put out different techniques combining experimental and modeling approaches: manipulation experiments in situ, studies in controlled conditions, monitoring, statistical and mechanistic modeling.
Tree nutrition and forest health
My first study on tree nutrition concerned the long-term effects of thinning on the foliar nutritional status of Norway spruce. Based on thinning trials, I showed that the increase in the forest floor mass with stand density was accompanied by a parallel increase in the foliar N, P and K concentrations (Jonard et al., 2006). At that time, we hypothesized that the forest floor provides an alternative medium for root growth, more favorable to P uptake than the underlying mineral soil.
During a postdoctoral stay in France (INRA), I combined a greenhouse experiment with a modeling approach to test this hypothesis. The experiment aimed at (i) comparing the P uptake of maritime pine seedlings growing either in mineral soil or in mineral soil covered with a forest floor layer and (ii) evaluating the contribution of the forest floor to P supply using an isotopic tracer (Jonard et al., 2009). The comprehensive description of the two soil-plant systems was used to develop and test a model integrating the processes that regulate P availability and P uptake (Jonard et al., 2010).
Throughout my career, I have been involved in forest monitoring activities conducted under the international cooperative program on the assessment of air pollution effects on forests (LRTAP/UNECE). In 2006, I processed the foliar chemistry data of the French, Walloon and Luxembourg plots of forest monitoring. This statistical analysis revealed a general decrease in the foliar P concentration of all broadleaved species and of some coniferous between 1993 and 2005.
In the Belgian Ardennes, the mineral nutrition of Norway spruce and beech trees is deficient in Mg and the foliar Ca concentration is very low. In addition, several episodes of decline were observed, particularly following the 2003 drought. In 1995, a series of liming and fertilization trials were installed in this region. I recently completed a synthesis of the results obtained in these trials. Liming improved significantly Mg and Ca nutrition, limited the increase in defoliation that occurred during the three consecutive dry years (2003 to 2005) and increased slightly stand productivity.
Biogeochemical cycles
Regarding the carbon cycle, I have considered three aspects: carbon allocation, leaf litter dynamics and soil respiration.
I worked on the elaboration of equations predicting tree component biomass based on tree characteristics (Wauters et al., 2008; André et al., 2010; Genet et al., submitted).
During my PhD thesis, I focused on the processes that regulate leaf litterfall, decomposition and accumulation. The objective was to evaluate the relative importance of the different factors by which tree species composition can influence leaf litter dynamics in mixed stands of oak and beech. As the species composition of leaf litter varies from place to place in mixed stands, I developed a mechanistic leaf dispersal model accounting for wind effects and release height (Jonard et al., 2006). Based on this expertise, I collaborated to the development of a seed dispersal model for Prunus serotina (Pairon et al., 2006). In parallel, a transplantation litterbag experiment was conducted to evaluate separately the effects of leaf litter quality and of environmental conditions on leaf decomposition (Jonard et al., 2008). The decomposition of the forest floor was also studied from soil respiration measurements taken in situ and during laboratory incubation of forest floor samples (Jonard et al., 2007).
At the same experimental site, two studies on water cycle (tree transpiration and rainfall) were also conducted. The objective of the first study was (i) to compare oak and beech tree transpiration in pure stands located at a same site and within a mixed stand and (ii) to evaluate the mixture effects by comparing tree transpiration of a same species in pure and mixed stands. In this work, we pointed out that the species and mixture effects on individual transpiration can be ascribed to contrasted individual LAI (Jonard et al., submitted). The second study describes how species composition and stand density affect the partitioning of rainfall into throughfall, stemflow and interception (André et al., 2008 a and b).
At this experimental site, it is also planed to complete nutrient budgets for stands of different species composition. Two components of these budgets were already characterized: atmospheric deposition and nutrient removal at harvesting; the remaining components will be quantified in the future (weathering and leaching). A PhD thesis was conducted to study the influence of tree species composition on atmospheric deposition, distinguishing external inputs (dry deposition) from internal cycling (foliar exchanges). Species composition was shown to strongly affect the alteration of rainfall chemistry when passing through the canopy (André et al., 2007 and 2008a and b). On the other hand, a destructive sampling was carried out to investigate the effects of tree species, tree size and harvesting regime on nutrient removal at harvesting (André et al., 2010).
