Contenu
!!! This course is a master's and bachelor's level course.

This composite course, offered at both the Bachelor's and Master's levels, is designed specifically for incoming exchange students. It introduces them not only to contemporary legal issues from a comparative perspective but also to the academic environment at UCLouvain’s Faculty of Law and to the broader institutional context in Belgium. Students engage with legal content through a combination of traditional lectures and interactive activities.
The course acts as both an academic and integrative experience, helping incoming students engage with legal topics across jurisdictional boundaries while orienting themselves within a new legal and institutional setting. A key objective of the course is to familiarise students with legal methodology and academic resources on site. The lectures consist of a combination of ex cathedra teaching, including lectures led by guest professors, and hybrid teaching (MOOC). They address topical legal issues and serve as the foundation for the evaluation. Through a combination of academic and cultural components, the course equips exchange students with both substantive legal insights and the practical skills needed to succeed in a multilingual complex legal environment.
Méthodes d'enseignement
The course begins with a welcome session introducing the course. Through lectures and related assignments, students are encouraged to approach contemporary legal issues that transcend national boundaries, such as human rights protection or decolonial approaches to international law, in a comparative and critical manner. Early in the semester, students participate in guided visits of the Faculty's law library, later followed by compulsory research methodology sessions in English and/or French. These sessions are designed to build competence in navigating legal sources and preparing academic work within the Belgian and European context. The course also includes a cultural dimension. Students attend the screening of a movie dealing with a socio-legal theme, followed by a moderated discussion. Finally, the course culminates in a visit to a key European institution – the European Parliament – offering students a direct insight into the EU legislative process, the practical functioning of supranational governance, and the interplay between law and policy-making.
