This course approaches the study of globalization from the joint perspectives of economics and political science. From an economic perspective, we will first explore the deep determinants of inequality observed across and within countries, exploring explanations ranging from geography, institutions, to history. Second, we will examine why development interventions designed without attention to local context often fail or backfire. Third, we turn to pressures reshaping globalization today: immigration, climate change, and artificial intelligence. From a political science perspective, we will examine the outcomes of globalization in terms of policy and analyse how it alters the decision-making process of national governments. In particular, we will focus on the regulation of technology and explore the complex relationship between globalization, (surveillance) capitalism and democracy. More broadly, this course will have a strong empirical focus, ranging from Western Europe and North America to Africa, Latin America and Asia.

Méthodes d'enseignement

Teaching consists of a combination of seminars and lectures. Students are required to participate actively in class.

Modes d'évaluation

The course evaluation is based on continuous assessment (25%) and a final exam (75%). The continuous assessment is based on weekly reading assignments and active participation in class. The final exam is a written exam. Marks obtained in the continuous assessment will carry over to the August session.
Note: Students are discouraged from using generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems in this course. Bibliographie

The bibliography will be indicated in the course programme. The weekly reading assignments will be provided to students on a weekly basis during the semester. In addition, slideshows will be made available to the students after each course session.
