The prerequisite(s) for this Teaching Unit (Unité d’enseignement – UE) for the programmes/courses that offer this Teaching Unit are specified at the end of this sheet.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

The aim of this course is to perfect the level of oral and written expression, it aims for an in depth comprehension and expression. It will develop the student’s analysis, discussion skills… as well as his ability to consult scientific sources in Spanish (literary criticism, linguistic references...).
It will bring the student to a greater autonomy and fluency in the targeted language.
It aims also to deepen the knowledge of Hispanic culture and diversity: we will focus on literature but also on the news, cinema, painting and history.
Throughout the course the student will aim for the C1-C2 level defined by the Common European Framework of Reference.

Content
To enhance students' language skills and promote autonomy in Spanish, this course focuses on the linguistic analysis of pragmatic phenomena in standard Spanish and their study in the context of linguistic research on current issues and social debates relating to Hispanic culture and its diversity. This linguistic approach is complemented by revisions of grammatical, lexical, syntactic and morphosyntactic content related to the linguistic phenomena covered.

Through the steps and reflections undertaken, students will learn to analyse linguistic phenomena in Spanish and to write a scientific paper in linguistics, by compiling a corpus of data and consulting scientific literature on their chosen topics.
Teaching methods
This teaching unit is delivered in person and includes lectures introducing the scientific method and some pragmatic phenomena in Spanish. The lectures are followed by practical exercises sessions focusing on the application of the analytical methods, as well as revisions of grammatical, lexical, syntactic and morphosyntactic content, and the reading and commentary of scientific research.

The in-person classes require active participation from students. They must be supplemented by daily independent study, including preparation of readings and exercises.

The course materials used during the sessions (PowerPoint presentations, vocabulary lists, exercises, etc.) are made available to students on Moodle. In addition, other materials (additional exercises and useful resources) can also be downloaded from this platform.
Evaluation methods
At the end of each term, a final mark is given whose repartition is:
1st term:
  • 30%: Research paper
  • 40%: Written examination covering the linguistic and language content covered in the course
  • 30%: Oral examination on the research paper
2nd term:
  • 30%: Individual portfolio
  • 40%: Written examination
  • 30%: Oral examination on the student’s portfolio and a linguistic reflection
Final mark of the UE: 1st term 40%, 2nd term 60%.

During the second session, assessment is based on a written and an oral examination covering all the course content.

In accordance with Article 72 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations (RGEE), the teacher may propose to the jury that a student who has not submitted their research paper within the required deadline, or who has not completed the required stages of the educational programme, be denied registration for the examination. In case of absence from an assessment, students must provide a medical certificate to the teacher within 48 hours of the assessment. In this case, the assessment will not be postponed or included in the final assessment. If a medical certificate is not provided, the students will be given a mark of 0 for the assessment in question.

Furthermore, for the writing of the research paper and any task that is subject to assessment, any use of generative AI, other than those explicitly authorised in the course instructions, is prohibited and will be considered cheating, under the terms of the RGEE. The assessment for each term is based on an oral examination and a written examination (research paper and individual portfolio). Failure in either the written or oral assessment results in failure of the entire examination. Moreover, in case of suspected cheating, the teacher may summon the students concerned. The students must be able to demonstrate oral mastery of the content developed in their work (in this case, the rule on absorbing failure stated above also applies).
