The course is devoted to an in-depth analysis of several works from the French Middle Ages (12th-14th centuries) based on a theme chosen each year
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Practise a critical text analysis;
 
2 Have gained an in-depth knowledge of poetical and rhetorical devices of literary texts;
 
3 Comprehend the continuities and disruptions within the use of these devices from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.
 
Content
The aim of the course is to learn the methods and challenges of the philological approach to medieval texts. 
Through collective and participatory work, we will go through all the stages leading from the reading and transcription of a MANUSCRIPT – in digital form – to the publication of the TEXT.
We will work on a myth from Ovide moralisé, namely the adaptation into medieval French of Ovid's Metamorphoses. 
Teaching methods
The course sessions will take the form of participatory workshops
- reading manuscripts (in digital form)
- understanding the text 
- comparing the different lessons preserved
- editorial choices   
- analysis 
Evaluation methods
Personal work: sample critical edition of an extract from Ovide moralisé 
Other information
Prior knowledge of medieval French is required.
However, proficiency in Latin is not essential, as this course will not explore the relationship with the source text in depth.
