Prerequisites
A basic knowledge of Hinduism.
Main themes
The course focuses on specific topics related to religious tradition, ritual or worship practices, beliefs, doctrines, philosophies or spiritualities known as Hindu, from their Vedic foundations and Brahmanic structures to their more recent devotional or tantric expressions, including their heterodox or sectarian developments, in India and Indianised Asia. 
It is based on a critical historical analysis of indigenous textual or archaeological sources relating to the issues addressed.
 
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 define the central issues that constitute Hinduism and identify the ideological challenges involved;
 
2 address special issues relating to Hinduism from a critical historical perspective;
 
3 use the tools needed to study in depth questions relating to Hindu doctrines, beliefs, religious practices, philosophies and spiritualities.
 
Teaching methods
Lecture based on supplementary reading outside of class.
Evaluation methods
Oral exam covering the material covered in class (reading portfolio and lectures).
