Prerequisites
A basic knowledge of Buddhism.
Main themes
The course focuses on specific topics concerning Buddhism, its doctrines, beliefs, philosophies and spiritualities, as well as its ritual and worship practices, from the tradition of the ancient schools to the one known as the Great Vehicle and their various tantric and sectarian developments, in India itself but also in Indianised Asia, in the Tibetan cultural area, in East Asia (China, Korea, Japan) and even in the West.
It is based on a critical historical analysis of indigenous textual and archaeological sources related to the issues addressed.

Learning outcomes
At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
| 1 | define the central issues that constitute Buddhism and identify the ideological challenges involved; |
| 2 | address special issues relating to Buddhism from a critical historical perspective; |
| 3 | use the tools needed to study in depth questions relating to Buddhist doctrines, beliefs; religious practices, philosophies and spiritualities. |
