Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

This unit contributes to the development and command of the following learning outcomes assigned to the Master’s degree in Interpreting :
1.5. Continuously update one's language skills and keep up to date with developments in each of one's working languages;
2.1. Master and apply analytical methods and comprehension tools, demonstrate an ability to synthesise information in order to distinguish between essential and secondary information in speech, ensuring that nuances are preserved;
2.2. Take a step back to enable an in-depth analysis of the speech;
6.1 Communicate in A, B or C languages in a correct, structured, neutral and articulate manner. Adapt the content and form of communication to the target audience and intended purpose, in accordance with the communication conventions specific to the context;
6.2. Communicate in a way that establishes trust with clients and audience members, using the appropriate tone and attitude;
6.4. Demonstrate flexibility and alertness to adapt to new communication situations;
FS-IC-2A. Develop skills that enable to perform retour interpretation tasks into one of the two C languages
(English or Dutch) Specific learning outcomes on completion of this teaching unit
On completion of this teaching unit, the student is able to:
  • Analyse the speech in depth. Identify its structure and demonstrate the ability to summarise, distinguishing between key and secondary ideas.
  • Using his/her notes, render the original message expressed in French into correct, structured Dutch.
  • Apply efficient strategies for deverbalisation and reformulation.
  • Translate short (max. 5-minute) speeches on general and current topics from French into Dutch, ensuring no errors in meaning.
  • Communicate in a way that builds trust with the audience.
 
Content
The objectives of this class aim at the following learning skills:
- develop individual note-taking systems ; 
- deliver correctly in Dutch the message originally expressed in languages A and B;
- update Dutch linguistic proficiency;
- develop the ability to make an in-depth analysis of an oral presentation;
- communicate in a way that creates a feeling of trust with the audience;
- demonstrate flexibility and mental acuity in adapting without hesitation to novel communicative situations.
This TU focuses mainly on 1) listening skills and analysis: how is the speech organized? What is the structure of the text? What is the core message? What is the purpose of the speech?  2) Conveying the message as precisely as possible (with all due respect to shades of meaning) in a natural and fluent Dutch.
Students will work on the basis of texts taken from real conferences, in order to become familiar with the profession.
