The course examines the LSFB-French interpreter's position in the market and presents career options.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

This unit contributes to the acquisition and development of the following learning outcomes, as assigned to the Master's degree in interpreting : 6.4, 6.5, 7.1, 7.2, 8.1, 8.2, 8.5.

Specific learning outcomes at the end of the learning unit
At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to:
  1. commit, decide and act autonomously and responsibly, respecting others and the context in which they work in a minority community and the ethical issues involved.
  2. describe the fundamental principles of professional interpreting ethics, in particular the deontological approach, which includes confidentiality, professional secrecy, neutrality, faithfulness to the message, impartiality, discretion and the teleological approach;
  3. explain the main stages of an interpreting assignment: from making contact with the client to the end of the assignment, identifying the ethical responsibilities at each stage;
  4. recognise the professional situations in which the interpreter is obliged to refuse an assignment, and justify this decision by reference to ethical principles or the limits of his/her competence
  5. identify the legal and ethical frameworks governing the profession, including the specificities of the field of signed language interpreting (accessibility, representativeness, power relationships, vulnerable audiences, etc.);
  6. adopt a respectful and responsible professional stance in simulated or analysed communication situations, using appropriate communication styles and demonstrating good listening skills and assertiveness;
  7. define and discuss the contours of the profession of interpreter, distinguishing between the roles, missions and postures expected in different interpreting contexts.
  8. develop a reflective attitude when faced with ethical dilemmas or professional tensions, based on theoretical references, professional charters or case studies.
