Main themes
This teaching unit will address different themes, both written and oral, such as: 
  • current political, economic, social and cultural events of the countries studied; 
  • contemporary history and political organisation of the countries studied; 
  • implicit cultural, historical or political references present in the texts to be translated or speeches to be interpreted;  
  • specific features of Spanish that are useful for a translator/interpreter working into French.

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

This unit contributes to the acquisition and development of the following learning outcomes, as assigned to the Master's degree in translation: 
  • understand the function of language variations (social, geographical or historical) and use the appropriate grammatical, lexical and idiomatic structures of their working languages (01 – Language and culture); 
  • identify cultural elements, values and references in the written or oral text (including presuppositions, allusions and stereotypes) and write in accordance with the cultural conventions, and conventions of genre and rhetorical standards (02 – Language and culture); 
  • draft texts for specific purposes in one or more of their working languages, taking into account specific situations, recipients and constraints (9 – Translation). 
Specific learning outcomes on completion of teaching unit 
On completing this unit the student is able to: 
  • identify and employ documentation that is pertinent and useful in comprehending, and enlarging upon, the themes and questions addressed; 
  • read, understand and summarise Spanish written texts and audio-visual material relating to themes and questions addressed;  
  • classify chronologically the most significant political processes of the countries studied, applying high-quality analysis and clear expression and respecting the terminology specific to the topic; 
  • bring together similar elements from miscellaneous sources to achieve a coherent, high-quality informational whole; 
  • understand, explain, situate and illustrate both the concepts addressed in the course and the implicit cultural, historical and political references present in the material to be translated or interpreted;  
  • fluently extemporize ideas and opinions on current political, economic, social and cultural affairs with clarity and attention to accuracy;  
  • render the essential content of complex messages in Spanish with rapidity and in a structured way with the aim of facilitating intercultural and interlinguistic mediation;  
  • present, orally and in written form, an individual work of analysis dealing with historical, cultural and linguistic topics addressed in the course and observing the rules specific to writing and public speaking in Spanish; 
  • apply to translating and interpreting the concepts addressed in the course. 
 
Content
The course is structured in two volumes or parts :
  1. Volume 1, "lecture", given by Mauricio Narváez.
  2. Volume 2, "practical course", given by Paloma Riera.
However, this distinction is not very clear-cut : the lecture course also includes exercises and the practice course includes theoretical aspects.
Furthermore, in terms of content, the course is made up of two poles: culture and  language ; but, by the very nature of these two poles, they will be constantly integrated: we will approach culture through language and language through culture. With this dynamic, the course proposes:
  1. for the culture pole, the study of the most significant events in the history (especially modern and contemporary) of Spain and Hispanic Latin America in the fields of art, thought, politics, society, language and translation.
  2.  for the language pole (in its descriptive, narrative and discursive dimensions), the courses propose the study of the morphosyntactic evolution of Spanish; the study of vocabulary and phraseology around different subjects (geography, territorial particularities, political system, economy, environment, population, employment, health, teaching, etc.) and the resolution of situations in the practice of translation and/or interpretation.
Teaching methods
  1. The lecture will favour a reverse teaching dynamic, i.e. participants will have readings to do before each class session, which will focus on these prior readings. It will also offer different modalities of writing exercises focusing on analysis, synthesis, description, argumentation, interpretation, narration.
  2. The practical course will also favour the reversed pedagogy and will include a multiplicity of exercises, both oral and written, of comprehension and expression of the language, aiming at the translation and interpretation operations and linked to subjects of Hispanic culture and history.
  3. Both parts of the course will make extensive use of the Moodle platform (a communication channel between students and professors) for the submission of documents, sharing URLs, handing in assignments, providing information, participating in forums, etc.
Teams will be the communication platform when the Covid situation requires online teaching. The co-modal format of courses will also be considered in these pandemic conditions
Evaluation methods
The assessment grade will be composed as follows :
  • Volume 1, the lecture course, includes 20% for continuous assessment and 80% for the final exam, which will be written. The final mark of the lecture course will make up 50% of the overall mark.
  • Volume 2, practical course, includes 30% for continuous assessment and 70% for the final exam, which will be oral. The final mark for the practical course will make up 50% of the overall mark.
The June session: There will be a written exam for the lecture and an oral exam for the practical course. Both will be face-to-face or, if the "covid" situation requires it, online, via Teams.
The September session: for the lecture course there will be a written examination which no longer takes into account continuous assessment; and for the practical course there will be an oral examination and the preparation of a portfolio of activities, details of which will be given on Moodle, to be handed in on the day of the examination.
 Both tests (written and oral) will take place face-to-face or, if the "covid" situation requires it, online, through Teams.
Please note: The assessments and assignments to be presented or handed in as part of the course are personal work that will reflect the student's skills in "Lengua y cultura aplicadas a la Traducción e Interpretación- Español". The use of artificial intelligence is prohibited. Appropriate mention must be made of the sources used. Any irregularity will be penalised in accordance with the General Study and Examination Regulations.

Audiovisual and textual material will be offered to students progressively throughout the course.
