Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

Contribution of teaching unit to learning outcomes assigned to programme 
This unit contributes to the acquisition and development of the following learning outcomes, as assigned to the Master's degree in translation: 
  • edit source text content for processing using a translation tool (13 – Translation); 
  • post-edit MT output using style guides and terminology glossaries to maintain quality standards in MT-enhanced translation projects (14 – Translation); 
  • use the most relevant IT applications, including the full range of office software, and adapt rapidly to new tools and IT resources having critically assessed their relevance and the impact of change on their work practices (15 – Technology); 
  • make effective use of search engines, corpus-based tools, text analysis tools, computer-assisted translation (CAT) and quality assurance (QA) tools where appropriate (16 – Technology); 
  • pre-process, process and manage files and other media/sources as part of the translation workflow, e.g., web and multimedia files (17 – Technology); 
  • understand the basics of MT systems and their impact on the translation process, and integrate MT into a translation workflow where appropriate (18 – Technology); 
  • recognise the importance and value of translation and language data, demonstrating data literacy (19 – Technology). 
Specific learning outcomes on completion of teaching unit 
On completing this unit the student is able to: 
  • use computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools; 
  • align source and target texts to create translation memories; 
  • use terminology management tools; 
  • use different tools to manipulate texts and structured data to fir the requirements of CAT tools and terminology management tools (for instance, convert terminology data to a specific format using Excel); 
  • integrate machine translation into CAT tools and post-edit a machine translated text; 
  • identify and classify quality issues in (machine) translations; 
  • understand basic principles of computational thinking and programming languages; 
  • use and develop simple programming scripts to take advantage of machine translation APIs and online translation tools and language models.
