Contribution of teaching unit to learning outcomes assigned to programme
This unit contributes to the acquisition and development of the following learning outcomes, as assigned to the Master's degree in translation:
  • analyse a source document, identify potential textual and cognitive difficulties and assess the strategies and resources needed to reformulate it in line with communicative needs (1 – Translation);
  • translate general and domain-specific material in one or several fields from one or several source languages into their target language(s), producing a ‘fit for purpose’ translation (6 – Translation);
  • translate different types of material on and for different kinds of media and target audiences, using appropriate tools and techniques (7 – Translation);
  • use the most relevant IT applications, including the full range of office software, and adapt rapidly to new tools and IT resources having critically assessed their relevance and the impact of change on their work practices (15 – Technology);
  • understand the basics of MT systems and their impact on the translation process, and integrate MT into a translation workflow where appropriate (18 – Technology).
Specific learning outcomes on completion of teaching unit
On completing this unit the student is able to:
  • undertake documentary and terminological research relevant to the source text employing rigour and critical acumen;
  • structure and exploit documentary and terminological research findings;
  • translate or post-edit a general, semi-specialised or specialised text written in German into French, following the translation guidelines.

Content
The aim of this teaching unit is to progressively take the students to the real-life working conditions of a translation project. Therefore, the students will have to manage the various stages of a translation project from German into French, from the purchase order to the delivery (administrative tasks, document and terminology research, translation, proofreading and revision). Among other tasks, the students will be asked to translate, in class and within a specific period of time, using computer-assisted translation tools if and when necessary, one or several texts pertaining to the fields of economic translation, legal translation and scientific or technical translation.
Teaching methods
In-class sessions, in computer room.
Evaluation methods
During the term: formative assessment.
January and August/September sessions: written examination.
Students are required to take one written examination per translation workshop (i.e. economic, legal, and scientific/technical translation) in connection with the topics dealt with during the term.
The final grade will consist of three integrated parts of equal importance. A pass (i.e. 10/20 or more) in at least two of the three parts is required to demonstrate the skills and knowledge laid out in the learning outcomes of the course. A failing grade (i.e. less than 10/20) in two parts of the course will result in a failing grade for the whole course. If the final mark is less than 10/20, the failed parts will have to be taken again during the August/September exam session. In case of an unjustified absence, students will have to take all three translation workshops during the August/September exam session. Students who have failed the course when the academic year ends will have to take all three translation workshops (economic, legal, scientific/technical) the following year.
The assessment may require, authorise or prohibit the use of machine translation and artificial intelligence depending on the exercise to be undertaken. In all cases, the use of machine translation and artificial intelligence will be subject to the conditions specified in the assessment instructions.
Other information
As the aim of the course is to develop students' translation skills and their ability to appreciate the quality of a machine translation, the course may include exercises that require, authorise or prohibit the use of such tools.
