Translation of extracts of birth certificates, death certificates, educational and professional qualification, property deeds, divorce proceedings, marriage contracts, contracts of sale, leases and other official documents requiring certified translation. 
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

Contribution of teaching unit to learning outcomes assigned to programme 
This unit contributes to the acquisition and development of the following learning outcomes, as assigned to the Master's degree in translation: 
  • analyse a source document, identify potential textual and cognitive difficulties and assess the strategies and resources needed to reformulate it in line with communicative needs (1 – Translation); 
  • translate general and domain-specific material in one or several fields from one or several source languages into their target language(s), producing a ‘fit for purpose’ translation (6 – Translation); 
  • translate different types of material on and for different kinds of media and target audiences, using appropriate tools and techniques (7 – Translation); 
  • understand and implement the standards applicable to the provision of a language service. (32 – Service Provision). 
Specific learning outcomes on completion of teaching unit 
On completing this unit the student is able to: 
  • undertake the actions that will enable them to become a certified translator; 
  • translate legal documents, certificates, deeds, contracts, insurance policies, etc., from Turkish into French while respecting the rules and legal provisions in force; 
  • respect all of the constraints specific to this type of translation. 
 
Content
  • Introduction to the theoretical and practical specifics of certified translation (definitions, legal framework, access to the profession, rules, etc.).
  • General feature of turkish judicial system
  • Ethics and professional rules
  • Legal translation and terminology.
  • Translation and revision exercises (prepared in advance or in real time)
  • Critical use of IT translation tools (term banks,  forums and social media, machine translation...)
Teaching methods
  • the critical discussion and comment of the exercises and tasks (theoretical introduction, theoretical readings, exercises and practical translation work) prepared at home.
Evaluation methods
January Exam:
- continuous assessment based on written preparation of the translations at home, class attendance and active participation  (50 % of final result).
- written exam : translation of a text dealing with a theme explored in class (50% of final result).

August/September Session:
The  continuous assessment mark will not be taken into account.
The written exam : translation of a text dealing with a theme explored in class (100% of final result).
