Prerequisites

To take this course, students must have reached level A2+ as described by the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, as evidenced by :
For people studying at ILV for the first time :

passing the A2 placement test organized by ILV at the beginning of the semester with a minimum score of 7/10
OR a recent DELF A2 certificate (maximum 1 year old and passing all 4 skills)

For former ILV students :

passing the LFRAN1201 course with a minimum grade of 14/20
OR passing the LFRAN1301, LFRAN1311, or LFRAN1321 course with a minimum grade of 10/20
OR taking the general LFRAN1301, LFRAN1311, or LFRAN1321 course at the same time.

Main themes

The course covers different types of text (explanatory, descriptive, narrative, argumentative, creative) in a variety of communication situations (e.g. introducing someone, recounting a culture shock, explaining the rules of a game, justifying a refusal, etc.)

Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :
By the end of this teaching unit, students will have developed B1-level writing skills, as described by the CEFR : produce uncomplicated, coherent texts on a range of topics within their field, linking a series of discrete elements into a linear sequence. give detailed, uncomplicated descriptions on a wide range of familiar topics within their field of interest. report on experiences, describing their feelings and reactions in a simple, structured text. describe a real or imagined event. tell a story. produce very short reports to convey factual information and justify actions.

Content

The course aims to:

Develop written expression skills through the regular composition of short texts covering a variety of genres and topics;
Experiment with and reflect on the contribution of generative AI to writing in a foreign language, from the perspective of “augmented human competence”;
Reinforce the B1-level grammatical foundations necessary for writing various types of texts (including: negation, imperfect tense, compound past tense, simple future tense, expressions of time, expressions of comparison, expressions of cause, and relative pronouns);
Develop the vocabulary necessary for writing various types of texts

Part 1: Language reinforcement
Group review of texts handed out the previous week
Part 2: Introduction to the writing assignment

Comprehension of one or more documents (audio, video, written)
Language focus: grammar and/or vocabulary
Writing planification

Part 3: Writing

Writing the first draft
Proofreading with IAG tools or among peers
Writing (continued)

For the following week
Students finish writing their text at home and receive formative feedback from the teacher or IAG.

Evaluation methods

Continuous assessment (30%)

Regular attendance and active participation in class sessions: 5%
Submission of 3 written texts without the use of AI: 15%
Reflection on AI-generated feedback: 10%

Continuous assessment tasks cannot be submitted after the deadline set by the professor, except with a medical certificate. No continuous assessment tasks can be submitted during the August session.
Certification assessment (70%)

Written production test (during the semester): 20%
Language test (during the semester): 10%
Final written production exam: 40%

An absence (justified or not) from any part of the certification assessment will result in a final grade of absence.
