The Advanced Master in international law is designed to provide students who have completed their studies in law with a specialized high level training in international law, covering both international public law as well as international private law. In line with the tradition established for many years at Louvain, this specialized training in international law is also firmly anchored in European law.

The Advanced Master in international law is a programme lasting one academic year (60 credits) made up of three main groups of activities : seven compulsory courses (35 credits), two optional subjects chosen from a wide range of option courses (10 credits) and a final assignment done in the context of a special seminar on international law and lectures on current issues (15 credits). These sessions, as well as certain other compulsory courses and some optional subjects, are reserved for students taking the Advanced Master.

The special admission conditions for this programme are as follows :

Students should preferably have gained a Master’s degree in Law, or a foreign degree in law which is considered equivalent, with a high grade. However the Master in International Law is not only reserved for lawyers ; students who have a Master’s degree in international relations or political science or any other degree considered to be equivalent with basic courses in law (international) may join the programme if they have gained a high grade for their degree.

Application forms should be submitted in the usual way, with the necessary documents; they are considered by the President and the Secretary of the Advanced Master panel. Students who satisfy academic entry requirements are informed by email straight away.

Mature students

As far as possible, the courses for the Advanced Master are grouped together over several weekdays, to make it possible for mature students to attend. In the past, students with professional responsibilities such as lawyers, diplomats serving in Brussels and European officials, have been allowed to stagger their courses: this will continue according to criteria set by the university.

Teaching method

A certain number of courses (prefixed MCEU) are specific to the Advanced Master in International Law and the Advanced Master in European law: this gives added reinforcement to the way in which international and European subjects are brought together. This is a long established Louvain tradition. 

The final assignment consists of a special seminar on international law throughout the academic year for 2 hours per week starting from the 7th week of classes, as well as a series of lectures on current issues. 
The specialized seminar consists of interactive sessions in which students are required to make presentations on specialized points of international public and private law. It mainly deals with recent jurisprudence and other legal documents which students are required to comment on. Each student is assigned different presentations based on the reading that all students have to do. The final written assignment is an overview of these presentations and a critical dissertation relating to the lectures on current issues.

Experience shows that this way of working is more helpful and effective for students, particularly those from foreign countries, than the solitary production of a traditional ‘dissertation’, possibly in another language.

The final assessment is continuously assessed ; there is also an assessment of the written overview and the dissertation.  Apart from this, assessment is through written or oral examinations.


Internationalisation
The nature of the programme makes it attractive to foreign students; a large majority of students from foreign universities usually attend.
