Marco Gonzalez (supervisor : David Bol) will publicly defend his PhD thesis "𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐰-𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐅 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭 𝐄𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐭-𝐨𝐟-𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬" on January 5, 2026 at 4 pm in Auditorium SUD03.

Wireless receivers for the Internet of Things waste energy because they’re usually designed for worst-case channel conditions, even though those conditions rarely occur. This thesis introduces 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐑𝐅 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭 𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 to the actual wireless environment, dynamically trading off noise and power. By extending adaptation beyond LoRaWAN’s spreading factor into the circuit level, additional 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐬. Two prototypes demonstrate how this approach can significantly extend battery life for long-range IoT devices by enabling an ultra-low-power receiver mode without sacrificing reliability.

📖 Title: 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐰-𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐅 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭 𝐄𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐭-𝐨𝐟-𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬

📅 Date: Monday January 5th at 4pm

📍 Location: Auditorium SUD03, or on Microsoft Teams

Supervisor : David Bol

More information: https://www.uclouvain.be/fr/sst/news/public-thesis-defense-of-marco-gonzalez-icteam
