In the data jungle, it's wise to get support.
SMCS, the Statistical Methodology and Computing Sercice Platform at UCLouvain, is a key partner for research centres, public institutions, associations and businesses that want to browse through their data with rigour, creativity and relevance.

Thanks to an agreement recently signed with the University of Namur, researchers in the humanities sector at UNamur now have easier access to this unique expertise.

But what exactly does SMCS propose?

Tailor-made expertise

SMCS is a team with a passion for numbers... but above all for interpreting them, enhancing their value and putting them into context. Whether it's a research team that needs a one-off hand to analyse its data, a company that wants to validate an algorithm, or a government department that wants to extract meaning from major surveys, the answer is always the same: personalised advice, clear solutions, a pedagogical approach and a critical eye.

Projects that make a difference

The strength of SMCS? Its diversity of projects, its many partnerships and its ability to adapt to all kinds of issues. Here are a few recent examples:

  • Coaching for researchers in medicine, linguistics, psychology, sport and sociology: the platform has supported them in their analyses, taught them to handle IT tools with confidence, and guided them to become autonomous.
  • Involvement in research projects, such as the identification of metabolic/biochemical pathways activated by natural antiparasitic derivatives, promising for combating sleeping sickness and malaria, or the study of vaginal microbiota to improve women's health.
  • Collaboration with the public sector: from blood quality and road safety to monitoring public cleanliness, municipal climate plans and studying the gendered aspects of housing, SMCS provides solid data and analysis to inform public policy.
  • Partnerships with the business world: helping to create spin-offs, analysing clinical data with CluePoints, studying radio audiences with the Centre d'information sur les médias (CIM)... the platform also acts as a bridge between science and innovation.
  • Tailor-made training, summer and winter, in R, Python, but also SPSS, Stata, JMP and many other tools... Initiations or advanced training in data analysis, diving into the world of AI or textual data analysis... for all levels and all sectors, online or face-to-face.

All these services and expertise are open to everyone, with privileged access for researchers in the humanities and social sciences sector at UNamur.
SMCS and UCLouvain are delighted with this new collaboration, which will enable us to turn more and more data into knowledge.
