Prerequisites
Knowledge of Chinese is recommended but not required. It is also necessary to have taken the course on the history of Chinese philosophy or to possess equivalent introductory knowledge of Chinese philosophy.
Main themes
The course consists of a critical reading of texts from thinkers within the Chinese cultural sphere, situating them in their specific context and highlighting their significance for the history of thought. The aim of the course is to enable students to approach the reading of Chinese philosophical texts independently, by providing them with the necessary linguistic, philosophical, and historical tools to do so.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 critically analyze philosophical texts from the Chinese cultural sphere;
 
2 situate the texts and their authors historically within this cultural sphere;
 
3 identify the central issues addressed and bring out their significance;
 
4 use the appropriate tools to study Chinese philosophical texts in depth.
 
Content
Each class will be devoted to a close reading of selected passages from a Chinese philosophical text translated into English, such as the Analects of Confucius, the Zhuangzi, or the Xunzi. Emphasis will be placed on interpreting philosophical arguments, key concepts, and the underlying cultural and philosophical assumptions. Particular attention will also be given to issues of translation.
Teaching methods
The course combines short lecture segments with collective discussion in seminar format. The method may vary depending on the number of participants.
Evaluation methods
Continuous assessment. The final grade will be composed of a grade for continuous preparation and participation in class discussions (50%), and a grade for a written test during the final session, consisting of an interpretation of one of the passages studied in previous sessions (50%).
