English courses or French-friendly

fial | Louvain-la-Neuve

English- or French-friendly courses provide help in English/French for international students who have only a passive knowledge of the language of instruction in these courses. This enables students to attend courses that would not otherwise be available, while helping them improve their proficiency in the language of instruction.

English- or French-friendly courses offer at least four facilities :

  • Reading : bibliographical references in English/French may be provided ;

  • Questions : students can ask their questions in English/French;

  • Assessment: students can give presentations, write papers and/or answer exam questions in English/French ;

  • Dictionary: students are allowed to use a dictionary (monolingual dictionary of the language of instruction or bilingual dictionary, as specified by the teacher), including during exams..

Students who wish to benefit from these facilities must :

  • Verify that the course has the label English- or French-friendly (visible in the course catalogue and in the course description sheet ;

  • Report to the teacher of the course at the first session of the course.

These courses are not bilingual : Courses are given in one language and teachers are open to communicating in English/French with international students. These courses are therefore not accessible to students who have limited or no knowledge of the language of instruction.
