Walter Lesch, born in 1958 in Rheinhausen (now Duisburg)/Federal Republic of Germany.
School attendance in Rheinhausen, Abitur examination in 1977 at the Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliches Gymnasium.
1977 – 1988: From Münster via Fribourg and Jerusalem to Tübingen

1988 – 1999: Fribourg (Switzerland)
Since 1988 scientific assistant at the Institute of Moral Theology at the University of Fribourg, since 1993 senior assistant and researcher of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) in the Priority Programme “Environmental Sciences”.
1996 coordinator at the Institute of Ethics and Human Rights at the University of Fribourg.
1997-1999 researcher in the SNF programme “Migration” and lecturer in media ethics at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences.
External lectureships: 1992-93 at the University of Kassel, 1995-96 at the University of Zürich, 1996-97 at the University of Lucerne, 1998-99 at the Catholic University of Applied Studies in Berlin (Katholische Fachhochschule Berlin) and at the Université catholique de Louvain.
Since 1999: Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium)
Since 1999 professor of ethics at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain) with a joint appointment at the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Arts.
The research is affiliated to the Institute “Religions, Spiritualités, Cultures, Sociétés” (RSCS) and to the “Institut supérieur de philosophie” (ISP).
The courses taught in several programmes at all degree levels are mainly on topics of social ethics and moral philosophy . There are two types of courses created with a special focus within religious studies: “Religions and gender” and “Religions and media”.
External teaching activities: 1999 at the Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen, 1999-2000 at the University of Fribourg, 1999-2001 at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences in Berlin (Katholische Fachhochschule Berlin), 2004-2005 and 2017-2019 at the University Saint-Louis in Brussels, 2018 at the Luxembourg School of Religion & Society.
External research stay: 2013 at the University of Erfurt (Forschungskolleg).
Various responsibilities at the UCLouvain (member of the research council, director of the master programme in religious studies, vice-president and president of the research Institute RSCS, president of the doctoral commission in religious studies).
Member of advisory boards of journals and of evaluation committees of the Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek – Vlaanderen(FWO) from 2006 to 2010 and the Fonds de recherche du Québec Culture et Société (FRQSC) from 2009 to 2015 and 2020-2021. Member of external evaluation committees of programmes at the University of Tilburg, the University of Vienna, the KU Leuven, the University of Montreal and the University of Graz. Since 2023 member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Faculty of Catholic Theology at the University of Vienna.
Since autumn 2024 professor emeritus and researcher at the Institute RSCS.

Walter Lesch, geb. 1958 in Rheinhausen (jetzt Duisburg).
Studium der Theologie, Philosophie und Romanistik in Münster, Fribourg, Jerusalem und Tübingen. Studienabschlüsse in Tübingen (Diplom in Theologie und Staatsexamen in den anderen Fächern) und Promotion (Dr. phil.).
Von 1988 bis 1999 zunächst Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Moraltheologischen Institut, dann Forscher des Schweizerischen Nationalfonds am Institut für Ethik und Menschenrechte an der Universität Fribourg (Schweiz) mit Postdoc-Projekten zur Umweltethik und zur Migrationspolitik.
Seit 1999 Professor für Ethik (Sozialethik/Moralphilosophie) an der Theologischen Fakultät (jetzt Faculté de théologie et d’étude des religions) und am Institut für Philosophie der Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain) in Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgien). Emeritierung zum 1. Oktober 2024.
Arbeitsschwerpunkte: Grundlagenfragen der Ethik, Gender, Migration, Populismus, Europa.

Profil
Situé au carrefour des réalités institutionnelles, des débats de société, des convictions et des disciplines universitaires, je considère mon rôle d'éthicien comme celui d'un traducteur : entre questions théoriques de la philosophie morale et enjeux pratiques des différentes éthiques « appliquées », entre argumentation éthique et expression culturelle, entre philosophie et religion, entre les sciences humaines et les technosciences et parfois entre univers linguistiques. Ce désir d'interdisciplinarité se concrétise par des activités dans plusieurs secteurs qui se stimulent mutuellement :
- Questions fondamentales de la philosophie morale ;
- Éthique sociale, politique et économique (notamment autour de la migration, du populisme et de l’intégration européenne) ;
- Bioéthique (avec une attention particulière pour les « medical humanities »).
- « Cultural studies » : Culture et religion ; rapports entre éthique et esthétique ; recherches sur la littérature et le cinéma ; communication et médias ; études de genre ; sciences des religions et théologie.
