Résumé

Cette thèse examine comment l’identité et les dynamiques économiques mondiales s’entrecroisent pour façonner les trajectoires de développement en Afrique subsaharienne. Le premier chapitre analyse comment l’éloignement ethnique peut constituer un obstacle à l’accès aux bénéfices de l’économie mondiale. Le deuxième chapitre étudie comment la mise en place d’une raffinerie d’or en Ouganda a provoqué un boom des exportations d’or, au prix d’une intensification de la violence dans l’est de la RDC. Le troisième chapitre montre comment les facteurs économiques et culturels influencent la manière dont les individus s’identifient aux groupes sociaux. Ensemble, ces chapitres révèlent les relations complexes et souvent fragiles entre identité, opportunité et intégration dans l’économie mondiale.

Abstract

This thesis investigates how identity and global economic dynamics intersect in shaping development outcomes in Sub-Saharan Africa. The first chapter examines how being ethnically distant in Sub-Saharan Africa can be a barrier to accessing the benefits of the global economy. The second chapter studies how the establishment of a gold refinery in Uganda spurred a gold export boom, but at the cost of increased violence in Eastern DRC. The third chapter shows how economic and cultural factors influence how people identify with social groups. Together, these chapters reveal the complex and often fragile relationships between identity, opportunity, and global integration.
