Land use, Sustainability, and Democratic Backsliding
Around the world, democratic systems are under pressure from growing populism, authoritarianism, far right movements, economic inequality, climate change, and resource shortages. Power is also becoming more concentrated, while public participation is declining. As a result, transparency starts to fade. All these political shifts interact with change in how land is used and resulting environmental damage. With this in mind, the ERC-funded LUDEMO project aims to investigate this complex relationship. By combining spatial data and analyses, cross-country comparisons, and political theory, the project aims to show how protecting democracy can also help preserve the landscapes that depend on it and, in turn, support it.
This project has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the grant agreement number 101198755.
