After obtaining her PhD from UCLouvain (1997), with a co-supervision from GMD-IPSI (Darmstadt, Germany), she was granted a “chargée de recherches” grant in October 1997, during which she received a Marie Curie fellowship at Utrecht University (1998-1999). This postdoctoral research stay formed the basis of a strong personal research network in the Netherlands. She became “chercheuse qualifiée” with FRS-FNRS in 2001 and “maitre de recherches” in 2010. She switched to a full-time academic career as Associate professor in 2013 and was promoted to full professor in 2014.

L. Degand’s  institutional service is long. Since September 2024, she is the Dean of the faculty. Before that, she was the head of the School of Modern languages, linguistics and literatures (2020 - 2024), and she was the Head of the research institute for Language and Communication (2009-2015). She fulfilled several other responsibilities, among which coordinator of international exchange (2001-2006 and 2021 - 2023), Academic referent for the Minor in Dutch language studies (2016-2022), member of the ethics committee of her research Institute (2021 - 2024), member of the committee for academic promotions (2017-2022), and she was a member of the research council (2016-2021). Since 2018, she is a member of the University’s deontological committee.

L. Degand lead and participated in several international and national research projects in the area of spoken and written discourse structure, grammaticalization and intersubjectification, discourse annotation, fluency and disfluency markers. Key for her career was being the chair of the European COST network TextLink (2014-2018), bringing together functional-cognitive and computational work on the annotation of discourse relational devices in more than 20 different languages. This gave rise to a strong international network, which she continues building on. Indirectly, it also lead to her involvement as working group leader in the European ITN project "Conversational Brains" on prediction and alignment in interactive discourse (2020-2024).
