Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

This unit contributes to the development and command of the following learning outcomes assigned to the Master’s degree in Interpreting :
1.5. Continuously update one's language skills and keep up to date with developments in each of one's working languages;
2.1. Master and apply analytical methods and comprehension tools, demonstrate an ability to synthesise information in order to distinguish between essential and secondary information in speech, ensuring that nuances are preserved;
2.2. Take a step back to enable an in-depth analysis of the speech;
2.6 Effectively use documentary and terminological research tools and techniques;
6.1 Communicate in A, B or C languages in a correct, structured, neutral and articulate manner. Adapt the content and form of communication to the target audience and intended purpose, in accordance with the communication conventions specific to the context;
6.2. Communicate in a way that establishes trust with clients and audience members, using the appropriate tone and attitude;
8.6. Demonstrate concentration, perseverance, tact and self-control, particularly in stressful situations.
FS-IC-2A. Develop skills that enable him/her to perform retour interpretation tasks into one of his/her two C languages (English or Dutch).

Specific learning outcomes on completion of this teaching unit
On completion of this teaching unit the student is able to:
  • Apply analytical methods to structure his/her speech.
  • Using his/her notes, deliver a 7- to 8-minute speech on a current affairs topic, a social issue or a prepared specialised topic.
  • Prepare to interpret a specialised subject by researching and assimilating the relevant English terminology efficiently.
  • Translate the message expressed in French into English in a correct, clear and structured manner.
  • Follow the communication standards specific to the context.
  • Apply his/her skills to produce different types of speech.
  • Adapt to the listerner’s needs without distorting the original message.
  • Demonstrate self-control and communicate convincingly.
