AnnéesTravail de fin d'étudeProgramme interuniversitaire

Retour en début de pageStudy objectives

The Master in Speech and Language Therapy is a training course with a professional focus which prepares students to become practice speech therapy at a professional level.

The speech therapist deals with communication and language and intervenes in disorders involving speech, the voice, oral and written language and arithmetic, whatever their origin, with children, adolescents, adultes and elderly people. Between medicine and psychology, training in speech and language therapy means that interventions are scientifically based, technically effective and deeply humane. The programme for the Master in Speech and Language Therapy is designed to develop theory-driven clinical skills and follows on from knowledge acquired in the Bachelor of Psychological Science with speech and language therapy as a major subject.

Teaching method

Retour en début de pageStrong points of the pedagogical approach

Teaching is done by specialists in the field who are both researchers and clinicians. They are doctors, psychologists and speech and language therapists who generally do clinical practice in the field of their teaching and are internationally renowned researchers. Through the diversity of the initial training (medicine, psychology and speech and language therapy), students gain very different perspectives and encounter the concept of interdisciplinarity, a key element in their future work. The clinical courses are mainly clinical case studies, the most up to date clinical tools are taught and students have the opportunity to use the most common ones in their training. Certain courses are taught as case studies in hypertext format which encourages a high degree of independence. Practical work is also organized, where possible supported by assistants who do clinical practice in the relevant field. A complete year on work placement in specialist centres and reinforced by work placement seminars organized by clinician/researchers provides students with thorough training in a range of different disorders.

Retour en début de pageEvaluation

There is an oral or written assessment of each course, depending on the lecturer. The clinical courses, the practical work and the work placements are continuously assessed and also the subject of a final written assessment.

Mobility and/or international links
There is an inter-university programme organized in conjunction with ULB in which each university is part of European networks. (For UCL, exchange agreements with Paris V and the University of Geneva).
This programme satisfies the recommendations of the Comité Permanent de Liaison des Orthophonistes-Logopède, a European association of professional national associations, recognized as equivalent to the Canadian Master in Speech Therapy.
