Résumé : Equality of opportunity (EOP) implies that individuals should strictly be held responsible for the consequences of voluntary choices that are within their control; these choices, also called effort, are considered as legitimate sources of inequality. On the other hand, individuals should not be held responsible for what is beyond their control, for example, they do not choose their place of birth nor their parents. These latter determinants, also referred to as circumstances, are considered as leading to illegitimate sources of inequality. The aim of the present paper is to compare the relationship between lifestyle choices and respectively general and mental health for men and women and investigate the observed gap in those health outcomes according to gender. We consider two different health outcomes: self-assessed health as a measure of general health and the EURO-D scale as a score of mental health. Our aim is to investigate whether and how current health-related lifestyles (i.e., efforts) shape each of the health outcomes differently and whether there are differences between men and women. We observe the differences in health-related lifestyles between men and women and the underlying correlation with the two health outcomes, which allows us to analyse whether the returns of effort on health differ according to gender. Finally, we measure and decompose the gender gap in inequality of opportunity in general health and mental health between men and women.
