Proponents of Citizen Assemblies (CAs) frequently extoll the virtues of inclusivity, insisting that maximizing the diversity of viewpoints has manifold benefits for our democracies. However, most remain silent on the issue of including citizens under the age of 18. While this exclusion may appear natural to adults with childist sensibilities, the objections against children’s participation do not withstand close scrutiny. What’s more, there may be benefits to children’s participation that go well beyond the simple fact of increased inclusivity. This talk defends the view that children should be systematically included in CAs in proportion with their demographic weight – and perhaps more.
