Welcome to the Faculty of Science

“The Universe is not too large for humankind; it does not exceed the capabilities of science nor the abilities of the human mind.”
Georges Lemaître (1894–1966)
Professor at the University of Louvain and pioneer of modern cosmology

Georges Lemaître, one of the most remarkable figures in the history of our University, devoted his scientific career to understanding the Universe and laid the foundations of modern Big Bang theory. His words still capture something essential about the spirit of science: curiosity, openness and the conviction that knowledge grows when we dare to explore beyond what we already know. This is also the spirit in which the Faculty of Science of UCLouvain welcomes international exchange students.

Studying abroad is much more than changing universities for a semester or a year. It is an opportunity to discover new ways of learning and thinking, experience another academic and scientific culture, meet students and researchers from different backgrounds, and become part of an international community of knowledge.

Through its teaching and research, the Faculty brings together a broad range of scientific disciplines. Our Schools offer programmes in Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Biostatistics and Actuarial Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine. Across these fields, students encounter both fundamental and applied approaches to science and benefit from the close connections between teaching and the research carried out within UCLouvain's research institutes.

From the infinitely small to the infinitely large, from living organisms and ecosystems to climate, matter, mathematical models and data, our disciplines address some of the most fascinating scientific questions of our time. They also contribute to understanding and responding to major societal and environmental challenges.

As an exchange student, you will have the opportunity to build an academic programme within this rich scientific environment, while experiencing life at a French-speaking European university with a strong international outlook. Exchange mobility is organised within the framework of existing agreements between the Faculty of science-UCLouvain and its partner universities, ensuring that your stay forms an integral part of your academic journey at your home institution.

Beyond courses and credits, we hope that your time with us will be an opportunity to exchange ideas, develop new perspectives, make connections across disciplines and cultures, and experience science as a truly international endeavour.

The Faculty of Science is committed to providing a welcoming, stimulating and human-scale environment in which students, teachers and researchers can learn from one another. Because the major questions facing science today transcend disciplines and borders, cooperation, intellectual curiosity and openness to others are at the heart of the education we seek to offer.

And because education ultimately reaches far beyond the classroom, the words of Nelson Mandela remain particularly meaningful:

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
Nelson Mandela (1918–2013)

We look forward to welcoming you to UCLouvain and to the Faculty of Science.
