The “gift” is one of the most enduring theoretical concepts in social sciences. Its primary meaning (understood as ‘giving without expecting reciprocation’) has evolved over many years of debate, particularly in anthropology.

The demography of Belgium and its "territories" constitutes an important part of the research activities carried out in DEMO. This research, carried out both in a historical and contemporary perspective, is based on an exceptional statistical heritage available since the 19th century on a fine spatial scale (municipalities, cities, districts, etc.). These include population registers, annual surveys of population movement and civil status, population censuses and, more recently, the National Register.
