Circle U. brings together nine European universities committed to a common project: building a more open, sustainable university that is more connected to major societal issues.

At UCLouvain, this alliance is much more than a network – it is a catalyst for innovation, collaboration and fresh perspectives for students, teachers, researchers and partners.

Discover what makes Circle U. so effective: its vision, Knowledge Hubs, collaborative platforms, and UCLouvain's active involvement at the heart of this European dynamic.

Circle U. is an alliance of ambitious, interdisciplinary European universities committed to society. Together, they are joining forces to create an innovative, inclusive and sustainable European university. Comprising nine partner institutions, including UCLouvain, Circle U. aims to tackle major contemporary challenges by fostering synergy between education, research and innovation.

Circle U. brings together universities, located both within and outside the European Union, which share common values: academic freedom, responsibility, partnership, inclusion and sustainability. The goal is to educate a new generation of citizens capable of working towards a more democratic, healthy and environmentally friendly world through open, interdisciplinary and collaborative learning formats.

UCLouvain is a driving force in the alliance, with a clear vision: to actively contribute to the transformation of European higher education.

For UCLouvain, participating in Circle U. means:

  • affirming its social and European commitment;
  • stimulating educational innovation and interdisciplinary research;
  • strengthening internal and external collaborations;
  • offering fresh, concrete opportunities to students, teachers and researchers..

The alliance serves as a strategic catalyst for breaking down barriers, collaboration, and global engagement.

Knowledge Hubs are interdisciplinary thematic centres that bring together students, researchers and partners to address major societal challenges:

  • climate: taking action for ecological transition and sustainable development;
  • global health: promoting health equity, prevention and universal access;
  • democracy: strengthening citizen participation, transparent government and social justice;
  • artificial intelligence: developing human-centred, ethical and sustainable AI at the crossroads of expertise in science and technology and the social sciences and humanities.

Knowledge Hubs also support project-based learning, social innovation and genuine impact in society.

Circle U. offers four platforms to bring about real change in universities:

  • Teaching Innovation Lab (CU.til): a teaching innovation laboratory.
