The doctorate in languages, letters and translation studies will result in a personal and original thesis that is part of ongoing debates in linguistics, literature and translation-interpretation. A large number of languages (ancient and modern, European and non-European), multiple cultural traditions, and questions related to current issues, are available to students who choose to undertake a thesis in this field.

Researchers in languages, letters and translation studies are mainly divided between the Institute for the study of Civilisations, Arts and Letters (INCAL) and the Institute for Language & Communication (ILC). Various methods are implemented (descriptive corpus analysis; interpretative analysis; thematic analysis; contrastive or comparative approach; experimental approach; etc.), and many disciplines are practiced (theoretical linguistics; history of literature, literary analysis; philology; discourse analysis; sociolinguistics; natural language processing; etc.). All these fields of investigation have given rise to a large number of theses.

Each doctoral student undergoes a doctoral training during the preparation of their thesis. This training introduces them to more specialized discussions in their field of research, (participation in international conferences, specialised seminars, summer schools; research stays at partner universities; publication of articles in specialist journals, etc.).

The research institutes provide doctoral students with an environment conducive to specialized and interdisciplinary collaborations, and to formal and less formal contacts with many researchers, both new and advanced, from many countries.

 

The 60-credit doctoral training program, referred to in 2.2.2., 6° [of the UCLouvain doctoral regulation], includes:

  • Advanced courses, participation in scientific congresses, conferences and high-level schools, or any other training deemed equivalent by the doctoral commission of the field;
  • Learning and practice of scientific communication through the writing and presentation of projects, articles, and scientific communications;
  • Possibly the practice of activities in a didactic framework" (excerpt from the UCLouvain doctoral regulations, p. 4)

Important points :

  • The mandatory components of the doctoral student’s programme, such as the confirmation procedure and private and public defense, are not considered here, since it is up to each university institution to recognize these activities or not as an integral part of the 60 credits doctoral training.
  • A production (communication, written work, etc.) carried out as part of a master’s course does not award credits in the doctoral training.
  • Doctoral training is acquired, inter alia, within thematic doctoral schools (Graduate Schools in the field of Languages, Letters and Translation Studies) and can be spread over the entire doctoral curriculum. This training results in the "Certificate of Training in Research".

FOUNDATION TRAINING (10 credits)

I. Interdisciplinary competences and professional project 
These are training activities developing interdisciplinary skills or "Soft skills" to promote the recognition of research and the employability of future doctors.As a guide: 1 day is worth min. 1 credit and max. 5 credits
II. Scientific activities 
Participation in an interuniversity doctoral seminar or another seminar deemed equivalent by the CDL. The seminar must be co-organized by academics belonging to at least two different universities (for the seminar to be recognised, you must have participated in at least 2 one day or 4 half-day seminars)10 credits
Attendance at a study day/colloquium/conference/series of seminars
(equivalent to at least one day)

Attendance at an international conference (2 days min.)
Note: the doctoral student is not required to write a report on the conference

Summer School (3-5 days of intensive training in the field of research, with preparation)

Note: In the event of a long stay abroad, the doctoral student may include, beyond the credits granted for the stay itself,  participation in conferences, congresses or symposiums during this stay (with the agreement of the supervisory committee and/or the competent authorities within each university). If it is a European doctorate, the stay abroad included for obtaining the European label cannot be counted towards doctoral training credits 
III. Publications

Each PhD student must keep their doctoral training log updated and consult the training offer on a regular basis.

 

École doctorale en didactique des disciplines

Répartition des 60 crédits de formation doctorale en didactique des disciplines

La formation doctorale en didactique des disciplines comprend 60 crédits, à répartir sur un minimum de deux années et un maximum de trois années. Cette formation s’articule autour de deux axes principaux :

  • La formation de base gérée par l’équipe d’accueil (30 crédits), composée
    - de deux éditions de séminaire de 3e cycle
    - d’un rapport de recherche
  • Les activités interacadémiques (30 crédits), composées
    - de deux éditions du séminaire interuniversitaire
    - de deux éditions à la journée d’étude annuelle des doctorant·es de l’Ecole doctorale thématique « Didactique des disciplines »
    - de la formation à la communication scientifique

L’étudiant·e doit compléter son carnet de bord au fur et à mesure de l’accomplissement de sa formation doctorale et joindre les preuves de participation/production/fréquentation pour chaque activité reprise sur ce document. La signature du promoteur ou de la promotrice est requise pour chacune de ces activités ainsi que le ou la responsable de l’activité de formation quand cela est possible.

Pour le domaine « Langues, lettres et traductologie », c’est la CDL qui examine les demandes et valide les différentes étapes du cursus doctoral.

The doctoral domain commissions (CDD) depend on the CODOL.
They are responsible for the recognition of the different stages of the doctoral students' curriculum, the arbitration of conflicts between the supervisors and the doctoral students, and any other mission entrusted to them by the Pro-Rector for Research.

For the field "Languages, letters and translation studies", it is the CDL that examines the applications and validates the different stages of the doctoral program.
