Wireless receivers for the Internet of Things waste energy because theyβre usually designed for worst-case channel conditions, even though those conditions rarely occur. This thesis introduces π©π«π¨π π«ππ¦π¦πππ₯π ππ ππ«π¨π§π ππ§ππ¬ ππ‘ππ ππππ©π ππ‘ππ’π« π©ππ«ππ¨π«π¦ππ§ππ to the actual wireless environment, dynamically trading off noise and power. By extending adaptation beyond LoRaWANβs spreading factor into the circuit level, additional π©π¨π°ππ« π¬ππ―π’π§π π¬ ππ«π πππ‘π’ππ―ππ πππ«π¨π¬π¬ ππ₯π₯ π¨π©ππ«πππ’π§π π¦π¨πππ¬. Two prototypes demonstrate how this approach can significantly extend battery life for long-range IoT devices by enabling an ultra-low-power receiver mode without sacrificing reliability.
